Out-SEO the competition with long tail keyphrases

longtailTo maximise the number of visitors coming to your website, you might try an alternative approach to SEO keyphrases. Traditionally, people have used short keywords to capture traffic such as ‘Mechanic Plymouth’ or ‘Blue Widgets. However, these days, those in the know are turning to the ‘long tail’ keyphrase to drive the right traffic towards their site.

So what are Long Tail Keyphrases? Quite simply, they are search phrases that involve a collection of keywords rather than just one or two words. For instance, if your keyphrase was ‘Wedding Cars’, you might expand this as a long tail keyphrase with ‘Hire Luxury Wedding Cars Chesterfield’.

The phrase ‘Long Tail’ relates to the decrease in the number of searches performed as the number of words in the search phrase increases. The shorter phrases are overused and there is tons of competition for those keyphrases, but the long tail phrases are underused and the competition is greatly decreased.

It can take months or even years to dominate highly competitive phrases on the Internet. However, long tail keyphrases can be driving great volumes of traffic towards your site within a few days.

There is little point trying to compete with big money firms for the most popular keyphrases. You cannot possibly beat them on short keywords, they have people, teams, and whole departments dedicated to Internet Marketing. BUT you can out-market them by using Long Tail Keyphrases.

But what if these long tail phrases only get a limited number of searches each month? Then increase the number of specific long tail phrases that you use. People using long tail searches are much more likely to be searching for the very thing that you’re selling, so that increases your chance of boosting revenue by playing outside the traditional SEO keyword game.

Rethinking search allows us to stop thinking of keywords, product names and brands as short phrases. Search is rapidly evolving, it’s all about phrases now, keywords are already out of date for the canny marketer. The average search term is growing, as people start to search specifically for what they are seeking. In the past, the average keyphrase was 1.2 words, last year, it increased to 2.1 words, but sources tell us that this year and beyond, it will push to 3 and 4 words.

Constructing keyphrases is all about thinking about what the customer might write when they are searching for a product or service. It’s not just about writing a bunch of terms with one keyword or brand name in it. It’s about embracing the entire long tail approach, accessing through Natural Search the thousands of potential customers that will use a long tail keyphrase when searching.

So, the long tail is a fantastic opportunity to increase the number of visitors coming to your website. It allows you to target multi-worded search queries and means that you can adjust your SEO and create content that matches the long tail approach. Of course, the downside is that you will need to work hard at promoting a large pool of long tail keyphrases, but this approach can yield a much greater conversion rate, so it will be worth it in the end. SEO is changing, don’t get left behind.

8 Ways to Mess Up the SEO You’ve Paid For…

Despair

If you want better results from your website, higher traffic and improved rankings, you may decide to employ the services of an Internet Marketing Expert. The SEO will use their expertise in Search Engine Optimisation and their knowledge of Search Engines and Internet Marketing to give you the edge over your competition. However, a small number of SEO clients tend to tinker with the SEO’s work once they have completed it, considerably undoing the improvements and damaging their connection to Google and other Search Engines.

Here are my 8 steps that you can take to really mess up the excellent work your SEO has done for you.

STEP ONE: Overwrite the Optimisation
The SEO has used their years of expertise to configure your website for the best possible results. Once completed, you will begin to see results start to trickle in slowly, but over time, with regular updates of SEO configuration and articles, you will begin to see the strong results that you want. If you want to mess this up, overwrite what the SEO has done for you with your own keywords, Meta tags and other essential internal work.

STEP TWO: Buy ‘Cheap’ Links
Your SEO will establish any inbound and outgoing links that you need. By buying ‘cheap’ links you are unnecessarily wasting money and risking your search engine positions. Cheap Link builders and those that sell them have to cut corners in order to keep the links cheap. You are risking the wrath of Google by paying for inferior links.

STEP THREE: Use an automated submission program
Submitting your content via an automated program is a great way to be really ineffective.
A computer program just cannot make the truly successful, relevant choices that a person makes when they submit to the right selection of sites. Google also frowns upon this and you could find yourself being penalised.

STEP FOUR: Buy ‘Links’
Check out Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. They have some VERY stringent rules about bought and sold Links. Buy lots of Links, cheap or otherwise and incur the wrath of Google in order to get your pages unranked.

STEP FIVE: Hire another SEO company alongside the first
Imagine what would happen if you were building your own house and you kept changing builders each time you ‘checked’ how it was going. You’ll never get a completed house and your house that you get will be a hodge-podge. Hire another SEO company to make a mess of your SEO ‘house’.

STEP SIX: Break the Rules
Google has a very clear set of rules regarding SEO work. With Google positioned with 80%+ of the market share in the UK, if you really want to disappear off the Search Engine radar, break as many of Google’s rules as you can.

STEP SEVEN: Ignore their advice
SEO Experts are called experts because they know their business exceptionally well; they have developed their expertise through experience. If you completely ignore your SEO’s advice, you can guarantee yourself missed opportunities, lower rankings and perhaps even getting yourself banned entirely.

STEP EIGHT: Get yourself banned
Spam excessively, make hundreds of cross links, participate in link farming, buy and sell your links, fill your site with profane material, use software to submit links, stuff your site, meta tags and title tags with keywords, and fill your website with invisible text. That should all get you banned nicely.

If you would prefer NOT to get banned from Google, and you’d like someone to help you with your site’s optimisation, contact Nikki at nikkipilk@gmail.com or visitNikkiPilkington.com

The 30 Day SEO Challenge is here!

It’s been great seeing you all do so well on our 30 Day Blogging Challenge, 30 Day Facebook Challenge, and sign up for the soon to be launched 30 Day Adwords Challenge, and so on August 1st 2011 we launched the challenge you’ve all been asking for – The 30 Day SEO Challenge!

The 30 Day SEO Challenge from Nikki Pilkington

In this Challenge you’ll learn about:

  • Finding the right keyphrases
  • Making META tags work for you
  • Why Titles matter
  • How to get front page Google listings and keep them
  • Whether link building campaigns are worth it
  • How to get links to your site that really make a difference

Alongside the Challenge is a brand new ebook – which is priced pretty reasonably we think at just £8.

Should I get the ebook or sign up for the email course?

That depends on how impatient you are 🙂

The email course will be free for the first 100 signups – after that it will be chargeable.

The ebook contains everything that’s in the course, plus a fair few extras – resources and articles that will help you – and more access to me if you need it 🙂

OK I want the ebook

Just pop over to our ebook store to pick it up – have a look at some of our other challenge ebooks while you’re there!

OK I want the email course

Cool – we reached 100 free signups pretty quickly, so I’m afraid you’ve missed the boat on that one.  However, we’re going to do things a little differently on the paid signups for this one 🙂 Instead of me telling you what to pay, you can make a donation. Minimum is £1, maximum is whatever you like. I would say if you were thinking of paying over £8 though you’d be better off getting the book 🙂 You can donate using the Paypal button below.

Things to note: Once you have paid, Paypal will route you to a page where you sign up to the emails – please wait for this to happen, or you won’t be added to the course, then you’ll email me in a grump 🙂

Why WordPress is a Good Choice for your Website

When you create a website, it is important that you choose a really good content system to help back up your great design. This will help you to manage your website more successfully and help it reach its full potential. WordPress is one of the best content management systems out there and is a great choice for any website. Read on for five reasons WordPress is a good choice for your website.

Popular
WordPress has got millions of users and there are close to 50 million WordPress websites in the world. This is a huge amount, and it suggests that they certainly must be doing something right for so many people to choose them for their website.

Lots of themes
Another great thing about WordPress is that there are lots of different themes that you can use. This means you can change the look of your website really simply: even if you are a complete beginner when it comes to websites, you’ll be able to choose a theme to suit your need and make your site stand out from the pack. With so many themes to choose from, there is something to fit with every style of site, from professional to fun and funky.

Easy to update
A lot of people also use WordPress for their websites because the content management system makes it really easy to update. The process for adding new content to your site is straightforward and efficient, so even if you’re not the best person in the world with technology, you’ll still be able to do it.

Customisable
WordPress also has loads of options that allow you to customise its themes so you can adapt your website to exactly what you’re looking for. This could involve something relatively simple such as adding your own graphics to the site, to more complex things such as adapting the code to meet your needs. There are also some great external software options that use WordPress to create fantastic, customised websites.

One of these options is Genesis Framework, which is powered by Studiopress. This offers a range of themes and has a focus on SEO, enabling you to boost the performance of your website while still benefitting from the best bits of the WordPress experience. There are different packages available for the Genesis Framework, which means you’re sure to be able to find what you’re looking for and, whether you’re a novice or an advanced user, it’s sure to be able to meet your website needs.

Multiple uses
There are also lots of different things you can do with WordPress. For example, as well as creating a professional website for your business using a service such as Genesis, you could also start a WordPress blog to further enhance your online business. There are also ways of linking WordPress to your social media accounts, such as Twitter and Facebook, so you can bring together all of your online activity into one place, allowing for more effective management and a more focused website that will ultimately be of benefit to you.

Guaranteed front page Google listings? What CAN we guarantee?

Thumbs down icon

Image via Wikipedia

I’ve written about guaranteed front page Google listings before, but it’s still something I get asked in nearly every phone call I have with a potential client;

I’ve spoken to another company who guarantees me a number one position in Google, can you guarantee me that too?

Well, the answer is NO. I can’t. And neither can anyone else.

Google themselves say in the Webmaster guidelines:

No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a “special relationship” with Google, or advertise a “priority submit” to Google. There is no priority submit for Google.

They go on to say that you can submit your site to Google for free, which of course is something I’ve written about before too.

So, if I can’t guarantee you the number one spot, what CAN I guarantee?

  • I guarantee your positions will increase – whatever your position in Google for a phrase right now, it will be higher while I’m working on your SEO
  • I guarantee your relevant traffic will increase – good keyphrase research at the beginning of our project will encourage you to choose pertinent phrases to increase the visitors to your site
  • I guarantee that the visitors you get will have more relevance and be more targeted – using specific and long tail phrases we’ll make sure you’re getting uality vitiors intersted in your products or services
  • I guarantee I will do my best – I work hard to ensure that my clients are happy, as I want you to sing my ppraises, of course 🙂

I can’t guarantee, you’ll be number one, or front page, or exactly how many visitors you will get.

I can tell you that recent clients saw front page listings within a couple of weeks for fairly competitive phrases. Others have taken longer with very competitive phrases. You can see our Facebook Photo Album for our latest celebrations of front page listings, or ask me at any time.

I won’t give you false guarantees; it’s not my style. If you’re interested in straight talking SEO, then I could be your girl – see our Higher Google Listings Packages for more details.

I’d love to get the word out about false guarantees and what can be guaranteed, so I would really appreciate any Facebook ‘likes’ or ‘shares’, Tweets on Twitter, or mentions in your blogs ifg it’s a good fit. Thanks in advance 🙂

Why you should have 2 blog titles for most blogs you write

The logo of the blogging software WordPress.

Image via Wikipedia

In the past few weeks, more and more of my mentoring clients want to talk about blogging, and in particular how to get more people to read their blogs.

“I’m Tweeting and Facebooking my blogs like mad, but I still only get a handful of readers, and that peters out after a few days”, one client said on the phone to me last week. And others are saying similar things.

It’s then that I ask the question: “How many visits do you get from the search engines to your blogs?” and the answer is invariably “Not many”.

But written well, a blog can be a traffic generator for months and even years.

See, it’s easy to think up a catchy headline for a blog, one that you just KNOW will have people who ‘follow’ or ‘like’ you clicking like mad. But you need to reach more people than just those who already know who you are.

What about the people searching on Google for the solution to a problem? Looking for a source of information? Perhaps looking for the exact thing your blog is written about, and in need of your services / products? They don’t know you from Adam, and they don’t follow you on Twitter or Facebook, but they’re your ideal customer. How are you going to reach those people?

In order to appear in (decent) results on Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc, you need to think about what people are searching for. And write your blog title accordingly.

“Oh but that means a really dull and obviously written title for search engines, and my blog is more creative than that”, said another client last week.

And I see her point – you don’t spend ages crafting a fantastic headline only to have to stuff it full of keywords so that it appeals to a search engine.

And that’s where an SEO plugin comes in handy.

Most SEO plugins for WordPress (we use All in One SEO) allow you to craft TWO titles for your blog posts. One of those titles will appear as the headline of the blog, so you can be as witty and clever as you like without worrying about those pesky search engines.

The OTHER title is one that appears at the top of the browser, and the one that Google will take into account when deciding where to put you in the results.

So, as an example, this blog is called “Why you should have 2 blog titles for most blogs you write” – that’s the title that will be Tweeted out, put on Facebook, show up in the blog listings etc.

blog1

However, the SEO title, as you will see from the top of the browser, is “How can I get my blogs to show up in Google? Two titles!”

blog2

That’s because I know that no-one is searching for ‘2 blog titles’ but I know that people are searching for ‘how do i get my blogs to show up in google’ and variations thereof. I could have made my SEO title “SEO for blogging – how 2 titles will help” or “Getting blogs into search engines – use 2 titles” – get the picture?

So when writing your next blog, think about the people who AREN’T following you, don’t know who you are, but are out there looking for the solution you provide. Write 2 blog titles for every post and let me know how you get on!

(As an aside, because I write a lot of my blog posts in response to questions, the titles I write tend to do OK in Google, so I don’t always have 2 titles – you may be the same, in which case, carry on 🙂 )

** UPDATE ** This blog post is now on the front page of Google results for the search “get my blogs to show in google” and “How can I get my blogs to show up in Google?
