Need comments and exposure for your blog posts?

Hands in the air - in concertI’m going to revive something I used to run in a slightly different form a few years ago, and I’d be delighted if some of you would join me.

One of the problems lots of us have is getting comments on our blogs, finding blogs to comment on, and generally getting exposure for our blogs.

Blog commenting groups are a great way around this.

How does it work?

  • Each group consists of no more than 8 people, and each person lets the rest of the group know when they have made a new blog post.
  • The group resolves to comment on the other members’ blog posts where possible
  • The group is also asked to Tweet and Facebook any posts that are particular interesting to them (this isn’t obligatory)
  • In theory every blog post should have at least 7 comments on it, but the fact that they are promoted too means that in practice they often have many more

Who’s going to be in it?

Well, I’m going to do as I did before and run multiple groups, some will be loosely themed (eg sites of interest to mums, B2B blogs, retail etc) and some will be just random.

You can be a part of as many or as few groups as you like.

How’s it going to run?

Ideally I’d like to run this using Facebook Groups – we’ll keep each group private so only the members involved can see the relevant info. However, I am aware that not everyone is on Facebook so we could also run it via an email discussion group and / or Skype chats. We’ll work it out as we go along.

I don’t have a blog, can I still take part?

If you’re planning on commenting on the other blogs in the group then yes, but each group will only have one person that doesn’t have a blog.

Can we use the groups to ask for feedback on blogs / blogging ideas?

Yes, it’s as much a support group at times as it is a commenting group

OK, so how much will it cost me?

Nothing. Zero. Nada. It’s something I ran on a networking site I’m no longer involved with years ago, and it worked well – I think it could work well again. Eventually I might turn it into a website, but it will still be free.

OK, in the first instance you need to email me and tell me:

  • Your name
  • The address of your blog
  • Your industry
  • Whether you want to be in the ‘loosely related’ groups, the ‘random’ groups or both
  • Whether you’d rather be part of a Facebook group, an email group, a Skype chat, or you don’t care

That’s it! Please don’t leave your answers on this blog post, as I’ll be sending all emails to Leigh to collate the groups, and it’s easier for us both to keep everything in one place.

Deleting comments that say 'nice post' or 'I agree'

zippingmmouthFollowing on from a post I made over at the Birds on The Blog site, on whether or not to delete negative or argumentative comments from your blogs, I’ve had quite a few emails from people saying that it’s not the negative comments that bother them, it’s the ones that say nothing.

You know the ones:

“Nice blog”

“I agree”

“You’re right”

On the face of it they’re innocuous comments, don’t really upset the apple cart, and show that people are reading your blog (allegedly, although not always).

On the other hand, they add no value, they don’t create debate, and a lot of times they’re there purely so that the commenter can get their link on your blog.

So what do you do?

Well, in the past I’ve been pretty relaxed about them and let most of them thorugh. Unless they’re blatant linkback attempts, like the ones that have “SEO training expert” as the name rather than a real person’s name, or they’ve got optimised links in the comment box, then I’ve let them through. I’m still of a mind that if they look like real comments and that people have left them to let me know they were here, then the comments should go through – they don’t cause any hassles for me, and it’s no big deal.

But if they’re clearly from a bot, done just to get the link back to a site, or I get duplicate comments on multiple blogs saying the same thing from the same person then I’ll be deleting them. This may mean that some genuine comments get missed out on, which is a shame, but I hope people understand.

I want comments that tell me something – you don’t have to agree with me, in fact it’s kind of fun when you don’t! You don’t have to suck up to me, you’re welcome to talk about your own business and experience when replying to my comments (in a lot of cases I ask you to!). I love finding out whether you’ve put my advice to work, and whether it works for you. And if it doesn’t, I welcome those comments too as maybe I can find out why. I love it when you tell me what’s going on in your own businesses, and refer me to your own blogs. I love it when you tell me I’m wrong, and tell me why. It’s all part of the debate, and part of the world of blogging. And it’s fun!

“Yeah, me too” – that’s not fun, now is it?

My blog has no comments – help!

We’re told that blogging is great for our business, helps build traffic to our website, enhances SEO, and practically does everything except wake us up in the morning with a cup of coffee. And a lot of the hype surrounding ‘having a blog’ is true:

  • It *IS* good for business – blogging about the things you are an expert in develops credibility and helps with branding.
  • It *CAN* bring more traffic to a website – it allows you to share information on places such as Facebook and Twtter, that bring in new visitors, and gives good reasons for old visitors to return.
  • It *DOES* enhance SEO, providing relevant and up to date content and links to the rest of your site.

(Sorry, I haven’t yet found a blog that makes coffee…)

But it can also be soul destroying – you write what you consider to be a great blog post, but no-one comments on it. You think your copy is great, your topic is fab and you KNOW that people are reading – but they’re just not commenting.

At, we know that one of the great ways to develop good traffic is by commenting on other people’s blogs. And by this we mean GOOD, RELEVANT comments, comments with content, not comments that are there just for a link back.

With this in mind, we’re always on the lookout for blogs that we can recommend to our clients, blogs in all sorts of industries that they can comment on and learn from.

It’s NOT about drive by comments and never returning visitors, it’s about helping blog owners by adding comments and spreading the word about their blog, and about helping our clients by giving them places to read posts, make comments and find out more about the world of blogging.
