Now, I should point out that I did consider myself fairly well informed about what I need to do. I had a good awareness of tools available and considered that I hadn’t done a bad job of getting myself on page 1 of Google for my chosen phrases. The 30 day challenge was very easy to follow, every day a new idea to help improve my positions.
Also lots of tools, tried and tested for monitoring/boosting ranking. All in very simple non technological language. Anything I didn’t understand Nikki helped with.
Even before teh 30 days was up Bump Buddies was no 1 rank for my preferred keywords. I plan to re use it regularly.
HIghly recommend this e-book to others and any other Nikki Pilkington products.

How else can you help your SEO / Google listings?

It’s easy to forget about search engine listings when the world and his dog are hyping social media marketing to the max, but it’s important that you don’t forget it.

While social media will obviously serve a purpose, a large proportion of people are still using Google and other search engines to find products and services.

How are you doing? Can you be found when people search for your products and services (NOT just your name!) online? Or are your potential clients finding your competitors?

If you think you’ve done all you can on your website, here are a few more ways you can enhance your SEO, followed by a couple of blog posts you might want to read, and of course the by now obligatory offer :)

3 Ways to Help your SEO

1) Get a Google Plus account. Like it or not, Google is giving preference to sites that have been ‘plus oned’ in Google+ and the more you take part, the more you can promote your sites and content. Share your site with your G+ contacts and encourage them to ‘plus 1′ you too.

2) Blog. I know, I know, you’re sick of hearing me saying it, but a regularly updated blog gives Google more content and makes your website seem more dynamic – both great for enhancing your SEO.

3) Guest blog or write articles. Incoming links do still count for something, and rather than buying a load of dodgy links and risking getting penalised, guest blogging on popular blogs or submitting articles to popular article sites will help you to get well thought of dofollow links that matter.

There are just 3 ways you can help your SEO with very little effort – have a think about it over the weekend and get started next week!

SEO Blog Posts You Should Read

  • They Know Your Name So What?
    It’s easy to become complacent when your analytics tell you that you’re getting lots of hits from Google and other search engines – but look at those stats a little more. 10 SEO tasks you should perform today

SEO Tasks to help your website today!

1: Check your page titles

Your page titles are the words that appear at the top of the browser window. For example on the front page of my website, mine says ‘Social Media Marketing Support – NikkiPilkington.com – Internet Marketing Expert UK’. Titles are one of the most important aspects of SEO, as they tell Google where to put you. Change yours to describe what you do, not just to say ‘MyCompany.com’. Make each page’s title different. You should be able to do this in your Content Management System.

2: Work on your META descriptions

Although general theory says that the description tag isn’t used in determining where a website is placed in a search engine, it is still an important part of SEO. Your description is the thing that will make people click through to your site – if it’s dull, people won’t click. Again, every page should have a different description tag, and you should be able to do this through your CMS.

3: Add in some internal links

Have a look through the pages on your website and see where you can then link to OTHER pages on your website (Google loves internal links). For example, if I were talking to you about having someone else write your blog posts, I might link to the page on my site featuring my Bonkers Blogging Offer. That’s a link to another page on this site – so it’s an internal link. The link to Birds on the Blog above is an external link. Go through your pages and see where you can add internal links.

4: Look at your page names

The name (address) of the original blog post promoting this ebook is http://www.nikkipilkington.com/10-seo-tasks-you-should-perform-today. Now look at your website page names – do they accurately describe what is on your page? Page names such as /about, /contact, /services aren’t helping your SEO at all. Change them to more descriptive names: /about-your-company-name, /contact-for-xxx-service, /xxx-services-in-place for example.

 

5: Sort out your image alt tags

If you have images on your pages, take the time to use the alt tag to describe them. This not only helps with SEO, but helps with accessibility for certain types of website readers (for the blind for example). You should be able to do this in your CMS. Don’t keyword stuff them, but do describe them accurately. For example: ‘the xxx company logo’, ‘picture representing xxx service’.

6: Check your Webmaster Tools account

If you don’t have one, sign up for one now. Once your site is verified your WMT account is a veritable mine of information. It can tell you where you’re listed, who’s linking to you, any errors on your site etc. It’s also invaluable if you run a WordPress setup and get hacked at any time, as you’ll need to resubmit your site to Google through a Webmaster Tools account

7: Vary your incoming link anchor text

There was a time when SEO companies recommended that you used a single phrase as anchor text for your incoming links. (What’s anchor text?) However, with the recent Penguin update this has changed. It’s now recommended that you vary the text on your incoming links to get the best effect.

8: Change your content

Once the main pages of your website are there, it’s tempting to just leave them – after all you may have spent a long time or a lot of money putting them together, right? However, for SEO purposes it’s good to change things around a little occasionally – not whole swathes of text but maybe the odd paragraph here and there to show that the page is being updated semi regularly.

9: Add in H1 headlines

If at all possible, use your main keyphrase for each page as a H1 heading. (A different keyphrase for each page, remember?) Only use one per page though – any more could be seen as spam. H1 has the double advantage of letting the search engines know that that phrase is important, and drawing your visitor’s attention to the headline, reinforcing their belief that they are in the right place

10: Review your results

There’s no point doing lots of SEO work if you don’t track your results. How many visitors are you getting? Are they coming in for the phrases you’re optimising for? Are any of your phrases not working? Use something such as Google Analytics on your site (I use Clicky) and check it regularly. You’ve done the work – review and measure the results. You’d be surprised how many people don’t, and only care about their positions in Google.

Yay! 2 – Blogging

1: Sort out your tags and categories

Tags are like keywords for your blog – you should add 4 or 5 to each blog post. Let’s say you wrote a blog post about children needing sunblock in the summer – your tags could be: children, kids, summer, sun care, skincare.

Categories are there to help you and your readers, so use them. They’re different to tags in that they can be more generic, and relate to areas of interest, topics, rather than specific posts. So, a telemarketing blog may use categories such as these: telemarketing, telesales, appointment setting, business development, lead generation. All related to telemarketing, but in different areas.

2: Write an editorial calendar

If you’re rubbish at blogging, the best thing you can do is put together an editorial calendar. This is a document that plans your blog posts for the next month, 3 months, however long you want. It not only makes you think about what you’re going to write, it gives you a sense of resposibility to then write it :) WordPress has a great plugin called Editorial Calendar  that allows you to look at each month at a glance and enter topic ideas for the future. Or just make your own in Word and stick it above your desk!

Yay! 3 – Twitter

1: Ask for the business

We’re so bombarded with people telling us that we shouldn’t use Twitter to sell, and social media is about being social, that we’re scared to put a foot wrong.  I’m not saying those statements are wrong – anyone who has known me for any length of time knows I’m a great believer in the ‘Social’ in social media.  However, most of us are there to build our businesses – we’re not just in it for a laugh. So I’ll be interested to see how many of you take up my next challenge – which is to ask for the business.  Not from your followers, but from people they know.  In the true spirit of networking, ask your followers if there’s anyone they could refer you to:

-       Who do you know who needs xxxx, I’d love an introduction

-       If anyone says they’re struggling with xxxx pass them my way, I may be able to help

-       Do you know someone looking for xxxx, please introduce me to them

No hard sell, no desperate please, just straightforward networking. If you see others posting this kind of thing, think about who you’ve seen or know who has been saying they have that particular problem recently, and introduce them.  I get a lot of my suppliers from Twitter, but I also post Tweets looking for suppliers that get no response – one of those could be one that may bring you business.  So go on, ask for the business – I dare you ;)

2: Track your results

As in anything, it’s nice to see how well you’re doing on Twitter. There are many tools out there to measure Twitter impact, both free and paid. Twittercounter www.Twittercounter.com will track the amount of followers you have, predict how many you’ll have in X days and allow you to see how many Tweets you’re sending a day. Tweetstatswww.Tweetstats.com – this is an amazing free application that will graph your Tweet stats for you.  Tweetreachwww.Tweetreach.com – will tell you how many people your Tweets reached, counting reTweets – well worth playing with.  SocialMentionwww.socialmention.com – allows you to track mentions of your name in various social media and is very addictive! There are many paid Social Media tracking systems out there – of these, in my opinion, Sprout Social is the best – www.sproutsocial.com. Pricing starts at $39 per month.

Yay 4! – Facebook

1: Update your description

I see many Facebook Business Pages not using their description effectively. The ‘about’ description is the text that will appear when someone shares your page on their profile – use it to fully describe your page so people will know what it’s about. Change it regularly and track what works best.

2: Highlight a post

Once you have written a post on your Facebook page, if you hover next to your name and click the star, this ‘highlights’ the post. What this means is that the post is made double width and thus gets more attention from visitors to your page. I’ve used this to good effect to promote my 30 Day Challenge books, so it’s well worth doing for important posts.

Yay 5 – Extras

1: Pinterest – rename your boards

When you first start with Pinterest, it’s tempting to give your boards funky and funny names – but that’s going to do you no good in search. Look at your boards and give them names that mean something and are likely to show up in a search. As an example, my board called So True is never going to turn up in a search (which doesn’t matter because it’s only quotations and funnies) but my board named Business Blogging Beginner To Pro, and the one called Facebook for Business, does show up. Don’t just give your boards generic names such as ‘blogging’ and ‘telemarketing’ – think this through as an SEO exercise and use your keyphrases where you can.

2: Forums – change your signature

Often when you sign up to a forum such as UK Business Labs, you’re entitled to use a signature file with links. You set it up, include a bit of HTML to create a signature, and Bob’s yer uncle, your signature is set in stone, to be appended to any post you make. If you’re like most people your signature will stay as it is for months, maybe even years, with no change. But if you regularly change your forum signature you not only create interest within the forum itself, you’ll be developing varied links into your site (which Google loves).

Concerned about privacy on Google+? [infographic]

I’m a big fan of Google+, despite the criticisms aimed at it from certain quarters. A great aid to SEO, thriving communities if you know where to look, and brilliant for website traffic, I’m not quite sure where all the ‘ghost town’ complaints come from to be honest!

One thing I have seen people worrying about is the privacy aspect, so this infographic from Zone Alarm makes interesting reading.

Google+ – A Circles Tutorial

Circles is one of the things that really sets Google+ apart from other social networks. In Facebook for example, your friends are your friends – It doesn’t matter if that person’s the postman or you sometimes talk to or your best friend from childhood.

In Google+, you can create circles and put different people in different circles. You can then choose to share things only to certain people and not to others. For example, you might share only professional updates with your work contacts, while sharing photos of a night out with your friend circle.

The people in your circles won’t know what circles you put them in. It gives you a whole lot of control over your data, without any potentially embarrassing situations.

Here’s how to use Google+’s circles feature.

Step 1: Click Circles

To access your circles settings, click on “Circles” in the top navigation boxes.

You’ll see a screen of the people who are already in your circles.

Step 2: See Potential Friends

Click on “People who’ve added you” to see who added you to their circles. You can think of these are your “friend requests.”

Step 3: Drag and Drop Into Circles

To add someone to a circle, just drag and drop them into the circles along the bottom.

Step 4: Create a New Circle

To create a new circle, click or drag and drop into the “new circle” circle.

The create circle box will pop up. Choose a name for your new circle, then either add people to the circle or create an empty circle.

Step 5: Adding by Search

If you want to add someone who hasn’t already added you, do a search for them along the top bar.

Click on the name to go to their profile page. Then click “Add to circles” to add them to a circle.

Step 6: Circle Specific Stream

Want to only see photos and updates from your friends? Or want to see what your family is up to? Google+ makes it easy to see only updates from the people you want to see updates from.
On the left hand side of your home screen, just click one of the circles whose streams you want to see. Google+ will update and only display updates from people in those circles.

Step 7: Circle-Specific Posts

To post an update to only certain circles, click on the status update bar and start writing a post. A box with who can view your post will pop up along the bottom.

To remove a circle, click the small “x” in the top right corner. To add a circle that can see your post, click “Add more people.”

You now learned how to see who’s in your circle, who’s added you to their circles, how to add people to your own circles, how to create a new circle, how to add people who didn’t add you to a circle using search, how to sort your stream by circles and how to post to only specific circles.

Google+’s circles features really makes it easy to use social networking without “leaking” updates you don’t leaked to the wrong people. It allows you to connect with the different people in your life in different ways.

Pin-etiquette: Important rules for Pinterest

As you know Pinterest drives more traffic than You Tube, LinkedIn and G+ according to an analysis by Shareaholic, so it makes sense to go and get a Pinterest account and get pinning.

In this post, we are going to explore Pin-Etiquette and how to join an already established community.

Pinterest opened it’s doors in March 2010, and is is currently still in it’s beta phase. This means that it’s still developing and things can and do change.

The community is established, it’s light hearted, fun and 73% female. Given that women influence $5 billion dollars worth of spend in the US alone, it’s a great place to be to raise product and brand awareness. Of course, where the women are, the men will follow. The savvy male marketers understand that to be on the radar of women means their products reach their ideal customers in a far more powerful way – by word of mouth.

Back to Pin-etiquette.

  • Pin your images from the original source, don’t pin from Google images.
  • Pin images to the correct boards – it’s ok to have plenty of boards of diverse topics.
  • It’s ok to re-pin other pins to your boards, but check where the image comes from. If the pin is from Google.com the chances are that image is not attributed correctly.
  • Thank people for re-pinning – it’s up to you if you do this. Remember you become a trusted member of the community faster and liked for your good manners – which is a good thing
  • It’s ok to have a product in the gifts section.
  • It’s ok to have affiliate links to things that you love – like books via Amazon or other amazing products BUT

Have a balance of boards, not every board should be filled with self serving products pins or affiliate linked. Pinterest advise you that the site is for content curation and sharing rather than promoting.

What is not allowed on Pinterest?

  • Nudity or hateful content isn’t allowed and you are advised to flag up content that contains this.
  • Comments that are not respectful.

Not too many rules and it’s all common sense so far :)

What do you do when you find an incorrectly sourced / attributed pin?

Leave a comment for the person who owns the pin, they can then see if they can take action and get it correctly attributed. Word your comment carefully – remember the be respectful guidelines. Many of the pinners have been there for some time and being respectful will win them over – you’ll make interesting new contacts.

What if there are multiple pins attributing to different sources?

Find the original source and re-pin that one. Where possible re-pin the original sources rather than a blog post or Google image. Most bloggers will credit the image to the creator or photographer, click that link and pin that image. If there is no link or image credit, the image could belong directly to the blog’s owner so it’s ok to pin.

How do I Improve my Google Plus Profile?

A sneak peek! I twisted Sarah’s arm and she’s giving us a quick look inside the 30 Day Google+ Challenge. Enjoy!

You’ve got your Google Plus account, adjusted your privacy settings and set up your Circles. What do you do next?

It’s now time to take a look at your Google Plus Profile. G+ profiles show up in searches and it helps people decide what circle they add you too. It’s important to get your G+ profile right. Your profile shows when someone presses the “about” tab on your profile.

Let’s take a look at my friend Steven’s profile. Imagine you’ve never met him or heard of him before.

If you had just discovered Steven’s profile, you’d be hooked enough to add him to a circle.

  • Add images. Make your profile pic a pic of you. The 5 images across the top can be images that describe you, your work or things that you find important.
  • Add links to make it easier for the reader to understand who you are and what you do.
  • Remember it’s ok to brag / boast about something. Put something memorable in this section.
  • It’s okay to leave things out. If you don’t want to mention what schools, colleges and universities you went to, that’s ok. If you add them it can reassure people that you are “educated” in what you do – it can add to your credibility.
  • Add links to your other social profiles so people can follow you on those sites.
  • Remember to add links to your websites and blogs

The more hooks you have in your G+ profile the more likely you are to be added to a Circle that’s listened too. The secret is to get the right balance of business and personal. I work to the rule if I wouldn’t want my mum to read it it, then I don’t write it.

Depending on your privacy settings you can see what type of content you share in your circles. For me this is a big indicator of where to place a person. If it’s things that I find interesting then it’s easy to place them. If I see they share other people’s content I can see that they are getting around and may share interesting things even if I don’t like their recent shares.

If I see a logo as a profile pic and a heap of self promotional tripe then I don’t add the person to anything. I move on to find someone else of interest.

Take a good hard look at your G+ profile.

Don’t bother with Google Plus

If you have been off visiting another planet, buried deep in the snow or only read mainstream newspapers I’ll forgive you for not hearing and knowing about Google Plus. Anywhere else, and you have no excuse ;)

Google Plus is a terrific tool for small businesses everywhere and if you get to grips with it you will reap the rewards.

It takes a bit of work, if you don’t like work stop reading now and go and play with your kittens or something. There’s no such things as a free lunch and Google isn’t handing you one right now either.

A little effort, spread over 30 days and you’ll see terrific results.

3. Add a G+ button to your website and blog 

4. Ask some friends to Plus a page. Make note of the pages usual traffic and see how much better it does once it’s been plussed. A week is all it takes to see better results.

8. Sharing good content with relevant circles is essential to growing your relationships. Need  a Google Plus bookmarklet – handy for sites and pages you wish to share and they don’t have a g+ button.

9. Upload some images to your profile. People are visual and having a profile image and several images across the top of you profile means you have put some effort into being on Google Plus. You are more likely to be added to circles if people can see what you look like. Personally I never add a logo to a circle to me it’s an indication that all I am going to get from that person is self promotional rubbish.

Of course if you don’t want better search traction, better engagement experience and more customers then don’t bother with Google Plus. Carry on as you are and let your competition get ahead of the game.
