heinzThe Tweetvine is abuzz today with the story of Michael Werch and his experience of ‘twitter-squatting’. Michael took on the persona of Heinz, and tweeted as them for a short while, to see how many followers he could build up, and what the consequences could be.

As it happens, he only managed to build up 300 or so followers (rising now!) and a couple of weeks before Heinz jumped on him and complained to Twitter, who changed his profile to make it clear that he wasn’t an official representative.

The interesting part, to me, is this quote:

ScaredI was speaking to someone the other day about the ‘advent’ of ‘Social Media Marketing’ and found myself saying “But Social Media Marketing is just what we’ve always done, isn’t it? Forums, mailing lists, groups of like minded people – we were doing these things 10+ years ago!”

And it’s true – or at least *I* think it is.

It’s sad to see so many people running scared of Social Media, worried they’ll get it wrong, worried they don’t know what they’re doing with this new and fancy technique of marketing their business / website. When really, it’s not that different to what most people have been doing all along.

10 Things to Post on your Facebook Fan Page

It seems so easy – click a few links and hey presto, you have a Facebook fan or business page!

But then comes the hard bit – you need to gain fans, keep them interested, get them to participate, keep the page going on top of all your other efforts, don’t let it get dull and boring, not be too self promotional – AARRGGHHHH!! How on earth can you think of all that AND run your business?

Marketing Donut that is. It seems like a lifetime ago that I had the telephone conversation with Kate about Twitter that resulted in this article (Can Twitter Help Your Business?), but it’s nice to see it generating comments.
