3 things a day can help to promote your website

Eternal clockOne of the things I hear most often when I talk to people about promoting their websites themselves, is that it ‘takes too much time’ and they ‘don’t know where to start’.

Well, while I can see where they’re coming from on the second point, the first one doesn’t ring true with me. It’s not about spending loads of time every day, it’s about doing SOMETHING every day and seeing the effort pile up and bring results. It’s about not giving in because you ‘don’t have the time’ and not putting things off because you’re ‘not sure how’.

I love business forums – and have been a member of many in the last 15 years. I love the way I can ask a quetsion and get umpteen answers in a short time, get opinions that don’t necessarily agree with mine, find out about other people’s businesses, and see posts that challenge my own viewpoints and educate me.

The problem is, in the latter half of 2009 I kind of let Twitter fulfil that ‘need’ and let my business forums go a little bit.

The Natural Life Cycle of an Online Networking Forum

Following on from my ‘Isn’t Social Media just what we’ve always done?‘ musings yesterday, I ended up chatting to an online friend about the forerunner of the Online Networking Forum, the Mailing List.

Mailing lists were a simple way to interact with people in a certain group – everyone signed up to the list, and when you posted a message, it went out to everyone else on the list. Sometimes there was a moderator who made sure the list wasn’t spammed to death, and you could usually opt to receive a digest of posts, or each post as it came in. It sounds a lot more complicated than it was!
