Great video spot Nikki!
This is a latest form data centre. The main issue in DC design is, as the man points out in the video, heat. Previous and newer small DC’s (sub-10k sqft), will have an integrated/bespoke design – none of those pods, everything in a series of classical IBM-style 1970’s rooms.
The problem for bigger DC’s came with the introduction of the blade server, which doubled power consumption/sqft, but tripled or quadrupled heat extraction requirements. Hence, all existing DC’s suddenly needed a redesign or upgrade; or they removed the 4th server cabinet on each floor
The pod has two distinct advantages: speed of build (you can see its just a warehouse); and containment of heat to just the pod area. Also, if a pod goes wrong or needs upgrading, then its a relatively simple slot-in/slot-out job.
You can buy single stand-alone pods, which come with power and cooler plant in standard 40ft shipping containers. Think $1mUSD for a fully fitted out operating unit. The DC featured in the video is probably coming in at less than $500/sqft, about half the industry average.
